What is Happeing in Sunday School?
In February, the kids decided to make a "Temple" for our village...not a "Synagogue". I think "sacrifices" may have played a role in that?! We have been focusing much of our time on LAWS, rituals and practices of Jesus' time. We have been researching and discussing the 10 COMMANDMENTS. We are working on recreating the Temple in Jerusalem that Jesus traveled to. We have made columns, arches and pillars...with much more to come!
Our younger students have been reading Bible stories and learning about music and instruments from the period. The children each made a "lyre" and are working on a song to sing and play their instruments! They have been learning about The Golden Rule and putting it into action!!!
This month we will be collecting books, construction paper, paints and brushes, scotch and masking tape to donate to The Boys and Girls Club of New Bedford.
Our main focus will be LENT. LENT begins on ASH WEDNESDAY and concludes at midnight on EASTER morning. It is a time of repentance, a time for us recognize where we need to work to become more like God created us to be. We do this in preparation for Easter. The season lasts for FORTY weekdays before Easter. We do not count the SIX SUNDAYS...because every Sunday is a "little Easter" celebrating Jesus' RESURRECTION! Our goal for Lent is to work on our own personal relationships with God. We will work on practices that will help us to engage with God. For us...by helping and caring for others.
THIS YEAR'S LENTEN CHALLENGE
This year we will challenge the Sunday School students, Confirmands and Mentors to start a "Jar for Jesus". What does that mean?! The challenge is that at least once a week you will make a "change" and put your "change" in the jar! For example...if you and your family go for fast food or pizza every Friday night...don't! take the money that you would have spent on take-out and put it in your jar. But, it doesn't end there...now go home and as a family make pizza! Mix up and kneed the dough...choose the toppings...bake it up and slice it up! You may find that you had a lot more fun and conversation, FAMILY TIME eating your own pizza at home than you would have if you had gone out! Change "movie-nite" to Scrabble or Wii nite...and drop the "change" in the jar!
We challenge EVERYONE, not just students and families, to join in on the "challenge"! Imagine what we can achieve in 40 days! We will bring our "Jar for Jesus" with us as a donation to The Sunday School Mission Fund on Easter morning.
Come to Sunday School...Together we make things happen!!!
